Do you ever wonder what’s really in your tires? Sure, there’s rubber, but what else? What makes car tires so heavy and durable? Believe it or not, your tires are made up of several layers of material. Keep reading to learn more about your tires and how to keep them in great condition.
The outermost layer of a tire is the tread. This is the patterned rubber layer that makes contact with the road. The pattern varies based on the type and purpose of the tire. Regardless, the tread’s purpose is to provide traction and cornering grip for the vehicle.
On the side of your tires, you will notice rubber that does not have treading— this is the sidewall. Sidewalls are made of rubber of varying stiffness, and they protect your tires from curbs, pavement, and damaging elements.
The belts sit just under the treads, and they are generally made from steel. The belts stabilize and strengthen the treads so the tires handle better and last longer.
Underneath the belts, you’ll find the body ply. It is one of the most important parts of the tire. The body ply is typically constructed using a sheet of polyester material topped with rubber. It plays a crucial role in helping the tire bear weight and maintain its shape. It also helps with the tire’s flexibility.
The “bead” sits on the interior walls of the tire. It is a mixture of rubber and wire materials. The bead connects the tire to the rim and creates an air-tight seal. The air-tight seal is necessary to ensure the tire does not shift as the wheel rotates.
The innermost layer of the tire is called the “inner liner”. This part of the tire is made with impenetrable materials that ensure air does not escape the tire, adding strength and durability.
Although tires are strong and durable, they need some help to keep them that way. That’s where General Automotive comes in.
