When you sit down in your car on a hot day and turn your A/C on, you expect to feel cold air, so it can feel like a slap in the face if instead you’re hit with hot air. At General Automotive, we get a lot of cars at our shop with A/C problems and wanted to talk about some of the most common reasons your air conditioner may be blowing hot air.
The condenser is a vital part of any air conditioning unit, as it’s responsible for cooling down your refrigerant. Often, when we discover an issue with a condenser, they’re just clogged and a simple cleaning is enough to get them functioning again, though they also tend to break down after several years, especially if they’re not properly maintained.
The compressor circulates coolant, but if there’s a leak anywhere in the system, you’ll run out pretty fast, and without coolant, you’re only going to be getting hot air from your vents. You won’t notice a pool of liquid under your vehicle, like you would with an oil leak, because refrigerant evaporates. The only way to really know if you’re leaking refrigerant is to have a professional Maryland auto mechanic measure your levels.
Compressors malfunction occasionally, most often after long periods of disuse. When a compressor isn’t working, antifreeze won’t be able to make it to your condenser, so your air won’t be cooled down. If your compressor isn’t working properly, you should have it serviced to get cool air flowing again!
Whether you’re having problems with your air conditioner, your engine, your tires, or any other part of your vehicle, General Automotive is here to help! We’ve been providing people in Maryland with our vehicle repair services for many years, and we hope to continue to do so for many more. If you’re having issues with your car, give us a call!
